What to do if you find a rodent on the roof?
Rodents are one of the most destructive and annoying animals that could infest your property. If your house is infested as well, you’ll know about it soon enough from all the noise they make (scratching, squeaking, scurrying). If these pesky creatures have taken a liking to your roof, little can you do to stop them from taking over? Your wooden structure will soon be full of holes and cracks. Don’t forget all the poop and urine and certainly not the diseases they spread.
So, you’ve never faced this problem before, but you think you can handle it yourself. What to do about rodents on the roof?
Inspect
Of course, you need to inspect. Before doing anything else, it is crucial to know what you’re dealing with. You don’t really think that just some squeaking and noises from the roof identify that it’s a rodent problem. Although much can be learned from the time you hear these noises. Of the rodents, only black (house) rats or squirrels dare to occupy roofs. If the noise is coming at night, it’s probably a rat, and you can guess the rest.
Get a torch and ladder and get on with it. Try every corner of the roof and attic. You need to know how and from where the rodents have gained access to the roof. Then just close them off.
Live cage trapping
If you are dealing with squirrels, the state laws might prevent you from harming the animals. So, it best if you use live cage traps. It also suits those who want to go down the non-lethal path anyway.
If you have the cage, you’re good to go. For these rodents, anything works as bait. What is important is the proper placement of the trap. Put the cage in a place they frequent, and the rest is just to wait.
Exterminating
If you are indeed dealing with rats, nothing works better than the classic snap traps. It’s last cause trying to remove rats using live cage traps or repellants. Rats infest in large number like 5-25. Besides, remove one, and it will be replaced by two more. You might not know this, but rats are second only to us humans in population.
Just get some snap traps and put in the places, rats move about. Bait won’t be all that necessary but extra assurance is never a bad thing. And therein just some days your rat problem is over.
Trees
You need to check if there is some sort of vegetation leading to or a few feet closer to your roof. If it is the case, trim it. Rodents are pretty good climbers, and this is an open invitation.
Repair
Now that the pests have been dealt with. Let’s get on with rat-proofing our house. You already know about the holes and cracks. Use steel sheet and bolts to secure these openings. Otherwise, they can just chew through. Repair any, and all broken woodwork check your insulation and pipes on the roof for damage as well.
